Hari Raya Nyepi is the celebration of the Saka New Year for Hindus in Bali, which is celebrated by doing Catur Brata Penyepian. On this day, all activities on the island of Bali are halted for 24 hours to give Hindus a chance to introspect and purify themselves. If you are in Bali during Nyepi, it is important to respect this celebration by not doing the following:

Leave Your Home or Accommodation

During Nyepi, no one is allowed to leave their homes or accommodations, including tourists. Pecalang, or Balinese customary security officers, stand guard around neighborhoods to ensure that this rule is observed. If you are in Bali, make sure to stay inside your residence and respect the ongoing silent atmosphere.

Turning on Lights or Loud Sounds

At night during Nyepi, all lights should be turned off or at least dimmed so that they are not visible from the outside. In addition, loud noises such as music or television with high volume should also be avoided. This is done to maintain the tranquility and solemnity of Hindus who are carrying out worship.

Using Vehicles

All vehicles, both two-wheeled and four-wheeled, are prohibited from operating during Nyepi except for emergencies such as ambulances. The streets of Bali will appear empty with no vehicle activity, creating a truly serene and peaceful atmosphere.

Doing Entertainment or Tourism Activities

Nyepi Day is not a time for vacation or travel. All tourist attractions, restaurants, and shopping centers will be closed. Beaches and other public places should also not be visited. Therefore, it is best to prepare food and personal needs in advance so that you don't have to leave the house.

Ignoring Rules and Disrespecting Traditions

Respecting the culture and beliefs of the local community is very important. Ignoring the rules of Nyepi, such as deliberately breaking the restrictions, can be considered disrespectful and offensive to the Balinese. If you are a tourist, show respect by following the rules.

Nyepi Day is a sacred moment for Balinese Hindus that should be respected by everyone, including tourists. By not leaving the house, not turning on lights or loud noises, not using vehicles, not doing entertainment activities, and respecting the existing rules, you participate in maintaining the peace and sacredness of Nyepi in Bali. If you are planning to be in Bali during Nyepi, be sure to prepare yourself and follow the rules for a harmonious and memorable experience.
